How Do I Work Out My Ring Size?

Understanding Men’s Ring Sizing

Men’s ring sizing can often seem confusing and complicated, especially if you’ve visited two different jewellers and received two different sizes for the same ring finger. How does this happen?

The Australian/NZ Lettering System In Australia and NZ, we traditionally use a lettering system, such as Q or Q 1/2. This system has its flaws, as the difference between half sizes is so small that your finger can swell by more than this simply by walking from outside into an air-conditioned shopping centre!

Why We Prefer the U.S. Sizing System Although we are an Australian-founded and owned company, we believe the U.S. men’s ring sizing system is superior. The difference between sizes like 8 and 8.5 is more meaningful and accurate for our customers’ everyday life and requirements.

Our Solution: Super Accurate Ring Sizer To make things even easier, we’ve created our own super accurate ring sizer, which we give away to our Australian and New Zealand customers for free. This eliminates all the guesswork and ensures you get the perfect fit with no risk. Get yours now!

For Our International Customers If you’re not in Australia or New Zealand, don’t worry! We have other suggestions and resources to help you find the perfect ring size. Read on for more information.

How Do I Use The Ring Sizer?

  1. Wrap the ring sizer around the ring finger;
  2. Insert the pointed end through the loop;
  3. Tighten the sizer on the finger until comfortable;
  4. Take the sizer on and off as if you were doing so with a ring;
  5. Loosen or tighten as necessary;
  6. Once you have the right fit, check the number the arrow is pointing at (if it is between numbers, then this is a half size);
  7. Done!

Customer Tips

  • Wide Bands: Wide bands often fit slightly tighter, so customers often go up half a size.
  • Comfort Fit Bands: Our bands are comfort fit, meaning they taper to the finger. You may require half a size smaller if you are used to a flat inner band.
  • Finger Swelling: Fingers swell throughout the day, so try your ring on first thing in the morning and after lunch or a day at work before deciding to exchange your size.
  • Seasonal Fit: What fits you perfectly in winter may not in summer. Use our Fit for Life policy to get a new size when needed!

Common Ring Sizing Questions

I went to three different jewellers and was given three different sizes. Which one is correct?

You’re not alone! While sizing should be consistent between different jewellers, slightly varying measuring techniques and tools can lead to different results. This is why we recommend using a sizing ribbon from the actual jeweller you will be purchasing from. We include one of our ring sizers when you purchase a full-priced ring from us, so if it isn’t the perfect fit, you can accurately measure your replacement and use our easy exchange system for our modern metals rings. For traditional metals, simply head to your local jeweller to have it resized.

But what if I order the wrong size, or it is for a gift?

If you find that the ring you ordered is the incorrect size, you may exchange it in accordance with our super easy exchange/returns policies. Just make sure you check out the policy for the specific metal you want.

Average ring size for men?

The average male ring size we sell is a size 10 (T 1/2), so we recommend purchasing a ring around this size. Check out our exchange and returns policies first; this may help you decide what metal to buy.

The tungsten ring I want is not available in the size I need!

Please contact us, as we can look into having it custom-made for you (this may incur a charge). Custom-made rings are only available if it is a design we stock and will stock in the future, so sale rings are generally not available. Custom men’s rings can require 2-6 months to be made and arrive back to us, so please get in early and let us know your timeframe.

Men’s Wedding Ring Finger

In Australia (and most of the world), a man’s wedding ring finger is the finger on your left hand next to your pinky. This is often referred to as your ring finger.

How to use string to quickly work out your ring size

While our ring sizer provides the most precise measurement, you can quickly estimate your ring size using the string method. Click the button below to learn this method and access our free string method sizing calculator for an immediate measurement.

Ring Measuring Tool (if you have a ring but don't know it's size)

We created the following tool for those who already have a ring that fits well, but aren’t sure of or can’t remember the size. Please note: this works best on desktop or laptop computers.

What if you get it wrong?

Factors Affecting Ring Fit

Even if you use our sizer, get measured at a jeweller, or use any other method, you might find your ring feels a little too big or too tight once you receive it. This can happen for several reasons:

Temperature

The temperature when you measured your finger versus when you first put on your ring may differ. Your finger swells and contracts depending on how hot or cold it is. If you followed our guide, you would have measured your finger throughout a normal day to get your average size. Depending on where you work and live, you might find that you actually did get the best ring size for your situation. Don’t panic yet; try taking your ring on and off throughout the day to see how it feels overall.

Note: Avoid wearing the ring all day initially, as depending on the material you’ve chosen, you may damage the ring, which could restrict your exchange options.

Ring Style Variations

Rings come in a variety of styles—thin, thick, narrow, wide, comfort fit, no comfort fit. These styles can fit slightly differently even if they are technically the same size. Ultimately, a comfortable ring is one you wear, while an uncomfortable ring sits on your dresser gathering dust. So, what should you do if your ring isn’t comfortable?

Exchange or Resize

This is where the policies of the jeweller you purchased the ring from become crucial. It’s extremely important that you buy your ring from a company like Mens Rings Online, which allows you to exchange your ring for a different size or style if needed.

Typically, this only applies to non-custom-made rings. If you opt for a fully custom ring, you should carefully review the policies of the jeweller. This is less critical for precious metal rings, as they can be resized. However, fully custom titanium or tungsten rings cannot be resized or exchanged, so it’s essential to get the size right or choose an in-stock option instead.

Finally...

To summarise all of the above, while there are many ways to get an idea of your ring size, here is the best way in our opinion:

  1. Get a ring sizer (get our free ring sizer here);
  2. Size yourself at different times of the day in different temperatures and take the average;
  3. If buying a titanium or tungsten ring, only buy from a company that allows exchanges;
  4. Once your ring arrives, try it on at different times of the day to make sure it is comfortable.
  5. Done!
